Become an RPSGT | RST | CPSGT

A-STEP is a fast-tracked education program that will help you obtain your goal of becoming a sleep technologist. Consisting of a combination of hands-on training and self-study at your own pace, A-STEP is designed for:

  • Anyone who does not hold the following credentials: RST, RPSGT, CPSGT, CRT-SDS, or RTT-SDS. (See AASM Accreditation Standard B-10)
  • Technicians required to complete an education program to meet current eligibility requirements with the ABSM, BRPT, or the state medical board.

Getting Started

There are two credentialling boards that allow you to obtain registry as a sleep technologist:

  • The American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM)
  • The Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (BRPT)

Both boards have various pathways for those pursuing credentialling as a registered or certified sleep technologist. A-STEP works in conjunction with the following two pathways: Focused Training or Clinical Experience.

Important Details

  • STAR Status:
    A-STEP has Sleep Technology Approved Resource (STAR) status.
  • Certification:
    Completing A-STEP in its entirety does not make you certified as a sleep technologist.
  • State Licensure Requirements:
    Review the state licensure requirements to work in the field of sleep technology.
  • Financial Assistance:
    As an independent self-study program, A-STEP does not qualify for use of financial aid or the GI Bill to pay for any part of the program.
  • Official Transcript:
    Transcripts are available for purchase at any time within a participant’s A-STEP account.
